Foundation

Luke 6: 46 “So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say? 47 I will show you what it’s like when someone comes to me, listens to my teaching, and then follows it. 48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. 49 But anyone who hears and doesn’t obey is like a person who builds a house right on the ground, without a foundation. When the floods sweep down against that house, it will collapse into a heap of ruins.”

It is one thing to listen to the Word of God and still another thing to follow it. You may think I am crazy, but I believe ALL the Bible. Yep, the miracles, the flood, the creation, the cross, the Red Sea, and yes, the coming of Jesus. ALL OF IT! In our present worldly way of looking at life it is almost like I am coming out of some "Bible Closet" to admit that I believe in all the Bible. The Bible doesn't have stories or half truths. The Bible is the Word of God and yes, the Bible is Jesus, because Jesus IS the Word of God. John speaks to this in John 1: 14 So the Word became human[d] and made his home among us. That "human" was Jesus and He Himself stated the very fact that He came to fulfill the Word by His very presence.

Why is all this so important? Because this is my foundation and my source for living the life of a follower of Jesus Christ. Jesus said "“So why do you keep calling me ‘Lord, Lord!’ when you don’t do what I say?" Good question Jesus. James spoke to this in James 1: 22 But don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. 23 For if you listen to the word and don’t obey, it is like glancing at your face in a mirror. 24 You see yourself, walk away, and forget what you look like. 25 But if you look carefully into the perfect law that sets you free, and if you do what it says and don’t forget what you heard, then God will bless you for doing it.

So basically James is saying exactly what he heard from Jesus and it became a life source for him in living his faith. If our foundation is Jesus then we are strong and unmovable and very focused on God's purpose for our lives. In the above verses Jesus emphasizes the point in this way:  48 It is like a person building a house who digs deep and lays the foundation on solid rock. When the floodwaters rise and break against that house, it stands firm because it is well built. So where does Jesus fit into this foundation of the house of our life? The Prophet Isaiah said it this way as God so directed in Isaiah 28: 16Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.

God placed Jesus in the midst of this whole world to be our cornerstone, which is the most important stone of a foundation. The internet says it this way: A cornerstone (or foundation stone or setting stone) is the first stone set in the construction of a masonry foundation. All other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure. If you. know Masonry you know the importance of a cornerstone and the "chief or principle" cornerstone of our lives is to be Jesus, and only Jesus. Peter said it this way in 2 Peter 1:10 So, dear brothers and sisters, work hard to prove that you really are among those God has called and chosen. Do these things, and you will never fall away. Our "proof" is found in who is our foundation and Jesus must be our foundation for living our lives. "If" Jesus is our foundation, then we will continue to grow in this faith and us calling Him Lord, Lord will be a living reality that is seen by the changes He makes in our lives. The proof is in the pudding. So live for Him in Word and Deed and base your life on the strength of that foundation. Then you can be assured your life will not fall like a house of cards.
