John 4: 1 Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John 2 (though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did). 3 So he left Judea and returned to Galilee. 4 He had to go through Samaria on the way. 5 Eventually he came to the Samaritan village of Sychar, near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there; and Jesus, tired from the long walk, sat wearily beside the well about noontime. 7 Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water, and Jesus said to her, “Please give me a drink.” 8 He was alone at the time because his disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. 9 The woman was surprised, for Jews refuse to have anything to do with Samaritans.[b] She said to Jesus, “You are a Jew, and I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink?” 10 Jesus replied, “If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me, and I would give you living water.” 11 “But sir, you don’t have a rope or a bucket,” she said, “and this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? 12 And besides, do you think you’re greater than our ancestor Jacob, who gave us this well? How can you offer better water than he and his sons and his animals enjoyed?” 13 Jesus replied, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. 14 But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
Here is the scenario. Without this living water you will thirst for truth and salvation the rest of your life. You will constantly be thirsty for something more and that thirst will never be satisfied. NEVER. But Jesus offers you a spiritual water that satisfies all your thirst and that satisfaction is endless and always fresh. Hmmmmm. Hard choice to make. Duh. the choice is easy and her life was full of indiscretions that are called sin. She could drink this water from Jesus and all of her life thirsting would be over. Her reply was very understandable in light of her choices. In verse 15 she says the following 15 “Please, sir,” the woman said, “give me this water! Then I’ll never be thirsty again, and I won’t have to come here to get water.” Problem solved. Not quite yet.
The implications of the following discourse were and still remain huge. Jesus reveals to a Samaritan woman that He is the Messiah. The Samaritans and the Jews hated each other, and both thought they had the truth about where and how the Messiah would come, and the Samaritan woman was no less informed about what her people thought would happen. Also, she was an outcast, and Jesus told her everything about herself and what He did in showing her He "knew" her, further leading her to tell others about this meeting at "Jacob's" well.
The implication for each of us is that Jesus "knows" us at our deepest level and at our deepest need. The Spiritual water He gives to each of us is further understood by the realization that when we receive Jesus the process of salvation is the forgiveness of all our sins past, present, and future, which quenches the thirsting in our soul and continually quenches the need in each of us for this spiritual water. Jesus sends the Holy Spirit as a spiritual Gatorade to quench the thirst of our tired and weary souls. Jesus does this continually in the sanctification process, and we grow in our walk with Him as this happens. When we study God's Word and learn to lean on God in a prayer walk, this process deepens and grows us into more mature believers, and then we can be the witnesses God has called us to be. To deny our soul the Word of God is to shortcircuit that process, and many born-again believers fall away from the faith, thus becoming thirsty again for the world and what it has to offer. Today's churches are full of halflings who are rejecting the effect of this living water and have nothing to tell a lost and dying world and the message doesn't expand and get out like God intended.
Here is what the woman at the well did when Jesus told her He knew all about her life. 39 Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” 40 When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, 41 long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. 42 Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.” The woman led them to Jesus, and they believed because they, too, had received His teachings and, in believing, received this living water.
Point in case. If we just tell them about Jesus, He will do the rest and lead them to a place of decision, one way or the other. You don't have to be a theologian to witness for Jesus. Tell about what happened to you. That is your testimony, and God will do the rest. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and The Life, and all that implies is His water is awesome, and when people hear of it, they will surely accept it, and their thirst will be satisfied. We carry the truth of that water in our witness, and we must share the message, and the truth will set them free.
Today's Message,
David Warren
