Wisdom Works!

Acts 19: 38 “If Demetrius and the craftsmen have a case against them, the courts are in session and the officials can hear the case at once. Let them make formal charges.39 And if there are complaints about other matters, they can be settled in a legal assembly.40 I am afraid we are in danger of being charged with rioting by the Roman government since there is no cause for all this commotion. And if Rome demands an explanation, we won’t know what to say.”41 Then he dismissed them, and they dispersed.

G.K. Chesterton wrote, “There is no sense in reasoning with a man who denies any validity in reason.” In the above verses, we can easily see that a little bit of common sense can make a bad situation better. But not listening to reason, or being kept out of giving a reason to a situation only causes confusion and riots as in the verses above. A silversmith by the name of Demetrius brought a case against Paul and his companions because they were preaching the hope of Jesus and that hope caused people to trust in Jesus and not in some idols Demetrius had been making for years. The case was brought before the mayor of Ephesus and those silversmiths thought the mayor would come down on their side, but in his reasoning, he saw it from a different perspective. The mayor realized that this riot was going to get the attention of the Roman government and might shut down "anything" they might worship. He realized that the commotion was instigated by "words" and did not need to happen and in their ignorance and trying to get their way they would bring more problems on themselves. So the mayor dismissed the case and that was that and the people dispersed. Problem solved.

Why do we avoid talking things out? Because we might have to admit we are wrong, or we might have to change the way we think. God calls us to humility as Christians, but in that humility there is also the need for truth, and for us, Jesus is the only truth. Jesus said this in John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If we try to hedge on what the Son of God said then we are watering down pure truth and common sense will show us that is not good. As we take this message with us every day of our lives as believers, we take a message that cannot be compromised or refuted in any way because this message has no leaks in its pure form.

If we try to involve other, worldly messages in with this message we water down the pure intensity of it. Paul relied on this pure truth wherever he traveled and the Holy Spirit revealed this hope to all who heard it. Those people who heard this message had a choice to receive it by faith or reject it. Those who accepted it gave up any other idols in their lives and completely "sold out" to Jesus. When the devil loses a soul to Jesus he will try to keep it from happening again and again and convince those in powerful positions to stop the message because knows the power of the message. God protects the message and He will make a way for this message to continue, just like He did for Paul. The sad part about the modern-day church is "We don't even share the message." We have succumbed to the distraction of "studying" about the messenger and about the message, but do not even share it.

God gives us wisdom about the message and about sharing the message and it is dependent on us to accept the call to share that message and follow the commission given by Jesus. Sometimes we forget that Paul followed the Great Commission and in following that commission he found his calling. The question is "Have you found yours?" Listen to some wisdom from someone who has lived a few years and seen a few things. Today is the day to take up your cross follow Jesus and allow the message, your testimony, to be experienced by a lost and dying world and your world will never be the same. No more "Holy Huddles." No more "Talking about what to do." Just living a "Living Testimony" that shows a changed life that was changed by the saving grace of God. This kind of "Wisdom Works" because everything else is secondary. Just make the "main thing" the "main thing" in your life.
