The Word on the Street - Fear is Good!!

Writer's picture: David WarrenDavid Warren

Proverbs 9:10 Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom. Knowledge of the Holy One results in good judgment. Scripture says that fear is good, as long as it is the right kind of fear! In fact, the fear that Proverbs speaks about brings wisdom into our lives and takes our human knowledge, and warps it into overdrive. But what good is that? It helps us know how to learn and live from a Godly perspective on everything in life.

To fear the Lord is a move in the right direction and that direction is God-centered and God-focused. Job 28:18 says “And to man, He said, ‘Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; And to depart from evil is understanding.’” God has placed a high price on wisdom and the price is "to fear the Lord." Our understanding of true wisdom is so limited in our own thinking and our life circumstances will always adjust wisdom to our own needs. But God's wisdom is much deeper and of greater value. His wisdom is described in Job 28:20 “But do people know where to find wisdom? Where can they find understanding? 21 It is hidden from the eyes of all humanity. Even the sharp-eyed birds in the sky cannot discover it. 22 Destruction and Death say, ‘We’ve heard only rumors of where wisdom can be found.’

23 “God alone understands the way to wisdom; he knows where it can be found, 24 for he looks throughout the whole earth and sees everything under the heavens. 25 He decided how hard the winds should blow and how much rain should fall. 26 He made the laws for the rain and laid out a path for the lightning. 27 Then he saw wisdom and evaluated it. He set it in place and examined it thoroughly.

In Job's great understanding of God's wisdom, we find a new level of living that is lived in fear of God. His majesty is far beyond our thinking and we see quickly that Job knew God in that way and it radically changed His life. Keep in mind we are fearfully and wonderfully made as God's creation, and as His creation, we are His. How much does He love His creation? Enough to sacrifice His son to get His creation back in fellowship with Him. Since we know of God's great love for us, we can fear Him and come to a new level of wisdom that transcends anything else. This fear is so good and so helpful for this ongoing relationship with God. This fear sets us "right" with God not only in our salvation but also in our ongoing growth or sanctification.

We begin to realize we must take "everything" to God in prayer. Every question to God for His answer. Every breath is the one He gives us, so we give that life back to Him for His use. Every step we take is a step that is to be led by the Holy Spirit. Every word is a word that needs to be given by God. Every, every, every...I sense a pattern here, don't you? God is the complete wisdom of life and to fear Him is when we really begin to realize it. Paul wrote about this in Ephesians 5:15 So be careful how you live. Don’t live like fools, but like those who are wise.16 Make the most of every opportunity in these evil days.17 Don’t act thoughtlessly but understand what the Lord wants you to do.

A healthy fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, so fear God if you want wisdom. We all need that wisdom, because we act so foolish at times. Trust the Holy Spirit and God's Word to show you the way and you will continue to grow in the wisdom of God. Further in Ephesians 6 Paul writes 18 Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers for all believers everywhere.

Tomorrow's blog is Word on the Street - Pray with Power. Tune in as we grow together on this pilgrimage into God's Word.
