The Selfish Heart

I get a kick out of how inconvenient we can make life for others because of selfishness. Like someone sitting at a light texting and the light changes and they sit there for another 2 minutes to finish their text, that can wait. So someone who needs to move on honks their horn and that person looks in their rearview mirror and says, "They can just wait!" "We call that rude, but in reality it is selfishness. Putting ourselves ahead of someone else to get what we want at the expense of making their life more difficult is wrong. The Apostle Paul spoke to selfishness is the following scripture in Galatians 6: Share each other’s burdens, and in this way obey the law of Christ. If you think you are too important to help someone, you are only fooling yourself. You are not that important. Paul is saying "Just get over yourself!"

The opposite of life being "All about us" is brought out by Paul in the verse prior to verse 2. In verse 1 Paul writes Dear brothers and sisters, if another believer is overcome by some sin, you who are godly should gently and humbly help that person back onto the right path. And be careful not to fall into the same temptation yourself. This lifestyle would fall into the category of selflessness, which has been exhibited by our Savior, Jesus. Paul wrote these words to the church at Phillipi in Philippians 2:Don’t be selfish; don’t try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves. Don’t look out only for your own interests, but take an interest in others, too. You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.Though he was God, he did not think of equality with God  as something to cling to.Instead, he gave up his divine privileges[b]; he took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When he appeared in human form, he humbled himself in obedience to God and died a criminal’s death on a cross.

We are compelled to have the same mind as Jesus when living our life, thus the "What would Jesus do" movement that lasted a little while. This lifestyle is not to be a "movement" but a "lifestyle." This selfless lifestyle may at times be met with those who are very selfish feeling guilty and they become aggressive because of the deep conviction they feel. Stay humble and God will take care of the rest. James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will lift you up in honor. Think of others and how you can help them carry their burden and be equally yoked in that approach and it will make it much easier to handle the burdens of life because we carry them together. Any numbskull can judge another person, without any grace. But a born-again believer who is living in the Spirit will always show grace and love and not condemn, but help the one who has fallen. Keep in mind, we are in this life TOGETHER!!

Vesselogical Out,
