The Prism Effect

Prism – an object that refracts light and changes it into colors.

Have you ever taken a prism and let the light refract (make light change directions) through it?  The colors are amazing and ever-changing and the amazing thing about it is all of that is done from light!  Light is an amazing thing that God created and it continues to amaze as we find out more and more about it.  On a spiritual level, light has many different effects on how we live and how we view life.  In 1 John 1:5-7, the apostle John wrote about light and it’s effects.  He says in verse 5, “This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all.  So if we say we want to live in the light of Christ that is good, real good.  His light expels darkness in our lives; in our thinking, in our serving, in our daily walk, and in our direction.  His light in our life changes how we appear to others.  They begin to see more and more of Christ and less of us and that draws others to ask questions like, “Hey, I’ve noticed a difference in you lately.  What’s going on in your life?”  At that point, we can openly say, “It’s Christ.”  That’s light!  When God’s light begins to work on our thinking we suddenly see things come to light that had been in the shadows before.  The world has a way of clouding or shadowing our thinking, and that causes major problems in the area of  convictions about lifestyle choices.   The shadows cause us to avoid seeing things clearly and our thinking that should be focused on Christ has some dark places.   His light shows those areas to us and we suddenly realize that our convictions are misguided and off center spiritually.   That light reveals things to us that only God can show us, and we begin to see things like He does. That’s light!  God’s light also shows us the condition of the world we live in and the need to be a servant in reaching that world.  Of course, Christ is our model in the area of serving, but many times we don’t fully understand all God wants from us because we aren’t looking at the world through His eyes.  His light reveals our personal mission field to us and challenges us to serve and shows us how to serve.  That’s light!  Our daily walk, how we live our life, is an area that needs constant light to show us how to live and God’s Word is the most effective way to turn that light on.  His light takes the ministry outside church walls and applies it through the way we live our life.  The best way to flip that light switch is to study God’s Word with intent.  In other words, be an aggressive learner.  If you seek God, you will find Him, and His Word is the best source of information for living your daily life committed to Him and His purposes.  That’s light !  That last part of lighting up your life would be in the direction God gives to those who seek Him.  God has a perfect will for each of us and our desire to follow His Will generates a light that shines on us, through us, and for us.  The Psalmist said in 119:105  “Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.”  God sends all of us out, but He gives us direction through His light.  His light equals direction and that direction is Perfect!  I will tell you straight up that I don’t see His light from time to time and it really makes me strain to make it through to the next stop, but He is faithful if we will trust Him.  in 1 Peter 1:19  Peter says, “And we have the word of the prophets made more certain, and you will do well to pay attention to it, as to a light shining in the dark place,  until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”    That’s light!

Just as light is refracted through a prism creating color, God’s light is refracted through our lives and the colors of His Glory are beautiful.  The question is “What will you do with the darkness in your life?”  We all have dark places.  In 1 John 1 :6 he says, “If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth, but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.” Only His light can reveal and clear out the dark things in our life and only His light can purify us completely.  Let His light shine through your life so the color effect touches others and lights the way for many.  Be the prism.

The Pilgrimage continues…
