The Pleasing Smell

Writer's picture: David WarrenDavid Warren

The fragrance of prayers lifted to our God mean something. A confident prayer that is asking for anything that pleases Him is a prayer that can make a difference in a situation. God hears us when we pray and in the scripture below all of this is explained. 1 John 5:14 And we are confident that he hears us whenever we ask for anything that pleases him.15 And since we know he hears us when we make our requests, we also know that he will give us what we ask for. In an effort to be totally truthful and Bible-based I want to share this scripture and realize it makes me go hmm. Notice the word "confidence."

We must ask ourselves this question. "Am I confident that God hears me?" By the way, I am confident. In fact, I have total confidence that God hears me and He is listening right now. You may say "How can you say that?" Psalm 139:1 O Lord, you have examined my heart and know everything about me. 2 You know when I sit down or stand up. You know my thoughts even when I’m far away. 3 You see me when I travel and when I rest at home.

You know everything I do. When I cry out in the middle of a bad situation and just say the word "help" He hears me. When I have an immediate need to which there are not any good solutions He hears me. When the world is closing in around me He hears me. When I experience a great victory in my life He hears me. God is everywhere and it ever listening. Psalm 139 says a lot more about this in the following verses. 7 I can never escape from your Spirit! I can never get away from your presence! 8 If I go up to heaven, you are there; if I go down to the grave, you are there. 9 If I ride the wings of the morning, if I dwell by the farthest oceans, 10 even there your hand will guide me, and your strength will support me.

11 I could ask the darkness to hide me and the light around me to become night—12 but even in darkness I cannot hide from you.

God is near and He is listening when we pray and He loves to hear His children lift up prayers to Him. It is not a mistake in 1 Thessalonians 5:17 where Paul writes the following verse 17 Never stop praying. God gave these words to the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 65: 24 I will answer them before they even call to me. While they are still talking about their needs,

I will go ahead and answer their prayers!

Paul talks about the lives of those who follow God and know Him in this way. 2 Corinthians 2:15 Our lives are a Christ-like fragrance rising up to God. But this fragrance is perceived differently by those who are being saved and by those who are perishing.16 To those who are perishing, we are a dreadful smell of death and doom. But to those who are being saved, we are a life-giving perfume. And who is adequate for such a task as this? May our prayers and our conversation with our God cause us to become more in tune to His desires for us. As we learn to converse with God almighty we also learn to see things like He sees them and it changes how we pray and for what we pray.

When we learn to trust God and pray to Him for all things it changes us into people who see the world as God sees it and our perspective also changes. No more saying that bad is good. No more believing that the Word of God isn't applicable to our situation. No more believing that the more we do the more God loves us. We begin to experience a love beyond our reasoning and that love changes us at our core. Grace begins to make so much sense that we immerse ourselves in the power and truth of it. The Holy Spirit begins to take over in our thinking and the fruit from that experience changes us into what God wants for our lives. One thing leads to another, but it begins when we lift up that sweet-smelling prayer of faith that connects our thinking to the thoughts and ways of God. Praise God for such a connection. God is listening. Lift up your prayers to Him right now and keep praying. James 5:16 The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.

The Pilgrimage Continues.
