Drive (def) - to carry on or through energetically. When we have drive we have a total attitude of moving forward, or even pushing forward, and this is not a passive way of living. We lived on one of the outer islands in Surf City, North Carolina a few years ago. To my surprise, the waves seemed to be "huge." I was used to waves from the Gulf, which in comparison was like a lake. The first time I went out in the waves I got "drilled" and what I mean by that is the waves were too overwhelming for what I was prepared for and I was tumbled and dropped on the shore, hurting. So I had to make an adjustment. When I went back out I quickly got past where the waves were breaking to a calmer place and just road the softer waves up and down, up and down. It was nice, but soon it got boring. Remembering my waves experience I had to make a decision, "Am I going to ride the waves into the shore in control or am I going to stay beyond them in the calmer water? My pride took over and I just went for it, and got crushed....again! Hurting, I rose to my feet and I thought to myself "I am going to ride those waves and be in control" and proceeded to go back out beyond the breakers and into the calm water.
I knew I couldn't do anything about the waves themselves, so it was up to me to figure a way to ride them. I wasn't about to give up because the waves were too big, so I just got in a position to "surf" those waves, with my body. I got in my best Superman pose and waited for just the right time and I rode the waves to the shore, as smooth as could be. Mission accomplished!! The waves didn't get easier, in fact they actually got bigger as storms approached, but I was not fearful. I was respectful to their power, but I had figured out how to handle them and actually ride them. The drive within me prompted me to figure out a way to handle the waves and then use them for my own fun. Drive.....
In part two of the movie Dune, the main character was a chosen vessel to lead the people and he learned from the desert people who had been overthrown and driven into seclusion by those wanting to control the planet for its spice production. His name was Paul Atreides and his family was royalty, but they had been overthrown by those evil ones called the Sardaukar, and they were from another planet. Paul was at first unwilling to lead the people because the task seemed so daunting, but he had been given a great power with which to lead and his calling called him out of the safety from the shadows to lead these people and take back their planet. In the movie they had to be ever conscious about the giant worms and their fear of those worms was great and justified.
When it came time for Paul to lead the people he found a way to ride the worms and thus control their power to win back the planet. He took what was feared and with his "drive" controlled it to win a huge battle. When we have that drive we see things much differently than others who may live in fear. For born-again believers, we know what gives us the power to have the drive needed to fight the good fight. The Apostle Paul wrote these very words to his 'son in the faith" Timothy in 1 Timothy 6: 12 Fight the good fight for the true faith. Hold tightly to the eternal life to which God has called you, which you have declared so well before many witnesses.
The good fight takes courage and faith and the good fight impacts now and forever. In fighting this good fight Paul reminds Timothy that some have become lovers of money and have fallen into the trap of those desires and that will plunge them into ruin and destruction. Sounds like when I tried to handle the waves without having a pure heart that was willing to learn from that force. We get distracted so easily, and in that distraction, we quit trusting God and have a few tumbles where life has pushed us around, so we try to just stay where it is calm and easy. But there is something more at work here and God is "calling us out" to the deep water and the bigger waves. God also equips us to figure things out and in that figuring He shows us how to use the waves of life to help us.
If you are tempted you are tempted by satan, for God tempts no one. When you are tempted to just stay in the calm water you can turn it around and use it for God's glory by praying for some huge thing to happen every time you are tempted. Then satan is causing you to pray for something good every time he tries to defeat you. He will flee from you and Jesus will give you the power to handle anything that comes your way. In 2 Peter 1: 3 God’s divine power has given us everything we need for life and for godliness. This power was given to us through knowledge of the one who called us by his own glory and integrity. 4 Through his glory and integrity he has given us his promises that are of the highest value. Through these promises, you will share in the divine nature because you have escaped the corruption that sinful desires cause in the world.
God gives us the ability to be a "wave rider" and that is because of the "drive" has given us. God not only says "Keep on going", but He also says advance, and it is time for all God's children to go out in the deep water and He will show you a way to "ride the waves!" No fear, just faith. God spoke this to the prophet Isaiah in Isaiah 41:10 Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.
Who is giving you your "drive?" God is the only "drive provider" we need, so tap into His power and His wisdom and you can ride the biggest waves you face. The world will always try to hold you back but don't give in to what the world says because God is the one who will take you over every mountain you face and give you the strength to go beyond the breakers that the world throws at you. Just look at the life of Thomas Edison and see what is possible for anyone who is loved powerfully. God's love is even more powerful and He sees great things for you when you live in the power of "His Drive."
One day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper to his mother. He said to her “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only you are to read it. What does it say?”Her eyes welled with tears as she read the letter out loud to her child…“Your son is a genius. This school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him. Please teach him yourself.”
Many years after Edison’s mother died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the century. One day he was going through a closet and he found the folded letter that his old teacher wrote to his Mother that day. He opened it…The message written in the letter was...
“Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school anymore. He is expelled.”
The world will never see your true potential, but God does because He is the one who gave it to you. NOW USE IT FOR HIS GLORY!!
Vesselogical Out,
David Warren
