How Thirsty Are You?

Driving up from Beersheba, a combined force of British, Australians and New Zealanders were pressing on the rear of the Turkish retreat over the arid desert. The attack outdistanced its water-carrying camel train. Water bottles were empty. The sun blazed pitilessly out of a sky where the vultures wheeled expectantly.  "Our heads ached," writes Gilbert, "and our eyes became bloodshot and dim in the blinding glare...Our tongues began to swell...Our lips turned a purplish black and burst."  Those who dropped out of the column were never seen again, but the desperate force battled on to Sheria. There were wells at Sheria, and had they been unable to take the place by nightfall, thousands were doomed to die of thirst.  "We fought that day," writes Gilbert, "as men fight for their lives... We entered Sheria station on the heels of the retreating Turks. The first objects which met our view were the great stone cisterns full of cold, clear, drinking water. In the still night air the sound of water running into the tanks could be distinctly heard, maddening in its nearness; yet not a man murmured when orders were given for the battalions to fall in, two deep, facing the cisterns" He then describes the stern priorities: the wounded, those on guard duty, then company by company. It took four hours before the last man had his drink of water, and in all that time they had been standing twenty feet from a low stone wall on the other side of which were thousands of gallons of water.

How thirsty are you to know God's will and God's wisdom? What is holding you back? There is a deep reservoir of wisdom and understanding and it is available in the Word of God. God has not left us "without" but He has offered to replenish us and satisfy our longing. If there is a longing He is calling from a deeper walk that gives us insight into real life. Many times replenishing water is right by us and missed by us because we are not reaching out to Him. James 4:8 Draw close to God and He will draw close to you. The road is paved with the blood of Jesus and we are given the distinct blessing from God to approach His throne of grace and ask for God's help in the freedom of that grace. The men in the above story were so thirsty for water that they would fight to their deaths to get a drink. Are you so close to this refreshing water that you can hear the sound of the water running right next to you? Why stop from getting it? The wall that is stopping you from getting a wonderful drink that satisfies your longing could be selfishness or stubbornness. Or it possibly be spitefulness, or anger, or even pride. Psalm 42 speaks to the longing and the realization of the need to ask God for water so you can grow in your faith. Psalm 42: As the deer longs for streams of water, so I long for you, O God.I thirst for God, the living God. When can I go and stand before him?Day and night I have only tears for food, while my enemies continually taunt me, saying, “Where is this God of yours?” My heart is breaking as I remember how it used to be: I walked among the crowds of worshipers, leading a great procession to the house of God, singing for joy and giving thanks amid the sound of a great celebration! Why am I discouraged?    Why is my heart so sad? I will put my hope in God!   I will praise him again—my Savior and my God!

Perhaps you are discouraged and need a Word from God to be an encouragement for you. Maybe you have been running from God and your thirst is overwhelming, and yet you feel in your heart there is a deeper walk with God that is available. Far deeper than religious practices or sacrifices. You will find God if you seek Him and He is available every second of every day. He is calling to you from that deeper place because He knows you need this water of wisdom and insight. Insight (def) - the power or act of seeing into a situation: penetration. The act or result of apprehending the inner nature of things or of seeing intuitively

Is God wanting to penetrate the religious, humanistic relationship you have with Him and take you to a deeper level? The answer is YES! God has given me a longer to see things on a deeper level and I have had to get beyond my past ways of thinking and open myself to Him and His Word. It is kind of scary but God is faithful to give us the pure water of the word if we are willing to get beyond our selfish, spiteful, angry, and prideful selves.

God wanted Jonah to go and preach to the Ninevites, but Jonah had a horrible attitude toward those people and he was running from God and not willing to see God's insight into this thing God wanted him to do. So Jonah ran. God ran after him and caused a storm and Jonah ended up overboard and in the belly of a fish that God had sent. As Jonah was being escorted around by this fish He came to his senses and cried out in Jonah 2: 1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from inside the fish. He said, “I cried out to the Lord in my great trouble,    and he answered me.I called to you from the land of the dead, and Lord, you heard me!You threw me into the ocean depths, and I sank down to the heart of the sea. The mighty waters engulfed me; I was buried beneath your wild and stormy waves. Then I said, ‘O Lord, you have driven me from your presence.    Yet I will look once more toward your holy Temple.’ “I sank beneath the waves, and the waters closed over me. Seaweed wrapped itself around my head.I sank down to the very roots of the mountains.  I was imprisoned in the earth, whose gates lock shut forever. But you, O Lord my God, snatched me from the jaws of death! As my life was slipping away, I remembered the Lord. And my earnest prayer went out to you in your holy Temple. Those who worship false gods turn their backs on all God’s mercies. But I will offer sacrifices to you with songs of praise, and I will fulfill all my vows. For my salvation comes from the Lord alone.”

Like Jonah, we too can follow false gods of religion, and ungodly trends, and just get off focus of where God wants us to go. Since God has a calling on all His children's lives we must draw close to Him and find His insights into what we should be doing in our lives. God is calling and His water is available to quench our thirst and bring us from the depths of despair and discouragement into the depths of His Word and His will. The question is How Thirsty Are You? Whatever wall is separating you from surrendering to God was not put there by God. God has busted all the walls between Him and us and He has broken the chains that are holding us back. Just surrender and draw close to HIm and you will see that this water was there all the time ready to be accessed. Yes. It is that easy.

Vesselogical Out,

David Warren
