He Ain't Heavy, He's My Lord

Matthew 11:28 Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”

Burden (def) - a load, typically a heavy one. Jesus is so loving and kind that the burden He puts on us is no burden. To follow Jesus means to take on a burden of direction and wisdom. Jesus told his disciples to let Him teach them, and when Jesus, who is the Word of life, tells us something it is time to listen up!! He also said if we want "rest" we need to take his yoke on us and see the world from His perspective. Jesus doesn't minimize the weight of some burdens, even heavy burdens. He says "Take my yoke upon you" and when working with a beast of burden we depend on the animal to handle the burden we can't handle and then we will guide that animal. The beast is dependent on the one holding the reins for direction and they just pull.

The instruction from Jesus in verse 29 is to put on the yoke (def) a wooden crosspiece that is fastened over the necks of two animals and attached to the plow or cart that they are to pull, that He offers. Jesus is ready and willing to give us direction as we travel through this life of faith. This life will have some heavy burdens put on us from time to time, and Jesus is totally there when we need Him, offering "Let me take that from you." It makes sense for us to give it all to Him and quit trying to handle a burden without direction. When we go through trials Jesus gives us insight into what is happening and what He is doing, and that helps us get over the hump and keep going. I need Him and you do too.

In John 14: Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me. If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him. So we have this special access to the God of the Universe and Jesus makes it all happen because of Calvary. No more blood sacrifices because His blood was the ultimate and final blood sacrifice and this access allows us to come before the throne of grace and ask God for His direction. Stop trying to figure things out on your own and let our Lord be the Lord of your life and take His yoke of direction on you and you will find rest. Jesus' words!!
