Brain Fog

Writer's picture: David WarrenDavid Warren

2 Corinthians 3:14 But the people’s minds were hardened, and to this day whenever the old covenant is being read, the same veil covers their minds so they cannot understand the truth. And this veil can be removed only by believing in Christ.15 Yes, even today when they read Moses’ writings, their hearts are covered with that veil, and they do not understand.

On October 19 I had a total hip replacement of my right hip. I came home from the hospital the next day and have been relatively pain free ever since in my hip area. Four days after getting home Andra and I got Covid-19 and thus started a deadly dance with the unknown effects of a horrible disease. We have heard that some people get a milder form of Covid and some get a worse case of it. Andra and I got the worse case and it has been quite an experience. We needed to sleep in chairs so our lungs could keep as clear as possible, but sleep ended up only being a word because we ended up staying up all night three nights in a row. This disease is also the disease that keeps on giving. My short term memory has suffered because of it and the term Brain Fog has come to be a reality in my life. It's kind of hard to explain, but my short term memory is suffering and the frustation of not thinking clearly at times is almost overwhelming. I lead worship at a wonderful church and part of that leading is "by memory" leading songs and leading the elements of a worship service and what used to be so natural is now something I have a struggle doing.

This is not my attempt for sympathy because I am one of thousands who have this Brain Fog and the unexpected clinging of Covid has caused us to struggle in all areas of our lives. In light of all the deaths from this terrible disease I will move on and say Praise God Andra and I lived through it and I am so sorry for those who lost loved ones from this terrible disease. Both my daughters also got Covid and even though they are younger, they struggled with it like so many. The unknown part of it is confusing our doctors and I knew this when I asked my doctor when I will get over this and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "who knows?"

I don't know about you but I sometimes take things for granted and forget their value. Like my health, my family relationships, and yes, even my faith!! When I seem to be going on pretty good I don't do a self evaluation and I begin to forget that the daily walk with Jesus is one where He speaks to me and I pray to Him a lot! There is a freshness to it that is also unexplainable and the clarity that comes from this relationship is unparalleled by anything the world offers. Sometimes we forget how important it is to get with God a lot and then we suffer. There are those who in this absentminded state begin to think everything is ok and they make it a habit to NOT get with God every day and it affects how they think and influences every part of their life. When this happens a spiritual brain fog begins to set in and the short term memory of what Jesus wants begins to set in and a drifting takes place. It is very subtle at the beginning but soon it begins to drain on our walk with God. As in the above scripture it speaks to the fact that the people's minds were hardened and to me that is the danger of letting the Brain Fog happen without realizing it and responding to it. If we live a casual faith, where we don't spend time with God daily take root, a spiritual fog will begin to roll in like in the move The Fog. In that movie a fog comes into a seaside town and in that fog are dead, dangerous souls who consume anyone who gets in their path.

Don't despair there is a huge BUT JESUS in this situation and it is found in the scriptures that follow these other verses. Veres 16-18 gives us great hope for renewal as it says 16 But whenever someone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away.17 For the Lord is the Spirit, and wherever the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.18 So all of us who have had that veil removed can see and reflect the glory of the Lord. And the Lord—who is the Spirit—makes us more and more like him as we are changed into his glorious image. The Spiritual Brain Fog as been lifted!!! Praise God! Jesus is our good news and He will continue to clear the fog if we will turn to Him and begin to learn of Him again. It will change how we live, we speak, and how we function in all areas of our lives. When we come to the Great Physician and ask Him how long this Spiritual Fog will last He doesn't just shrug His shoulders, He immediately makes it right and we are back on track with no fog. Jesus spoke these words in John 14:2 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it! Those are some pretty convincing words. In fact, we can live by them.

Time to let Jesus clear the fog and turn to Him and ask Him to rekindle your fire and move on. I may still have some Brain Fog from Covid, but praise God He is faithful to clear the Spiritual Fog that comes on me from time to time.

The Pilgrimage continues.....
