Borne Again Identity

The very first Jason Bourne Movie was The Bourne Identity and from the beginning I was hooked. The movie opens with a fishing boat hooking a man floating in the ocean and nursing him back to health. Immediately they notice this man was no normal man and he had a gps tracker imbedded in his back. When Jason Bourne woke up he woke up to a man digging that gps tracker out of his back with a knife and as he jumped up and looked around he quickly realized he didn't know where or who he was. He begins to have glimpses of the life he was living as a special agent and how his past was filled with special training for espionage. He befriends a girl he meets and she is having trouble getting to another place because she is short on cash. So they both are on the run from the very ones that Jason Bourne was working for and they stop at a truck stop to eat. The girl is curious as to what Jason cannot remember, who he works for, and how he came to be so well trained. To which Jason tells her "I don't know how I can do what I do. I just know I can do it." The following dialogue continues while they are eating in the truck stop.

Marie- And you have no idea-not clue-what came before that?

Bourne - No

Marie - When you think of it, before the ship--before you wake up on the ship, what do you?

Bourne - Nothing. It's just not there. I can tell you the license plate numbers of all three cars out front. I can tell you that the waitress is left-handed and the guy at the counter weighs two hundred and fifteen pounds and knows how to handle himself. I know that the best, first place to look for a gun is the cab of that grey truck outside. I know that at this altitude I can run flat out for half a mile before I lose my edge. I knew that you were my first, best option out of Zurich? How do I know all that? How can I know all that and not know who I am? How is it possible? The following scripture helps us get a perspective on what happens when Jesus comes into our life. Also, we realize that there is more to us than meets the eye!!

John 3:5 Jesus replied,“I assure you, no one can enter the Kingdom of God without being born of water and the Spirit. 6 Humans can reproduce only human life, but the Holy Spirit gives birth to spiritual life. 7 So don’t be surprised when I say, ‘You must be born again.’8 The wind blows wherever it wants. Just as you can hear the wind but can’t tell where it comes from or where it is going, so you can’t explain how people are born of the Spirit.”

When we were born again we were made new. It is amazing how quickly we forget that and how weak and apathetic we become in our faith. This should not be. We are no longer the same because the Holy Spirit is now in our life and we have a spiritual vibrancy that should even cause us to wonder what is going on. We discount the presence of the Holy Spirit in our life and thus live a mediocre, religious life that we easily understand and accept. To not believe in God using us and the Holy Spirit working through us is almost like telling Jesus he is lying in the following scripture. John 14:12 “I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works, because I am going to be with the Father.13 You can ask for anything in my name, and I will do it, so that the Son can bring glory to the Father.14 Yes, ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it!

So, this burning desire to follow Christ as never before should not be a surprise to you unlessss.....you have forgotten who you are and whose you are!! As you read this blog I hope I have found you at a time you have been drifting in the ocean of apathy and I am waking you up to remind you that you have a special calling that God has given you. Perhaps you have lost your born again identity and because of poor discipleship, poor teaching, or poor theology you began to think that God doesn't have a special plan just for you. That plan is your Born Again Identity and God will pursue you to get you "on track" with a life lived for Him. Of course, we know that it is all about Jesus and serving the Lord, but that is how the Holy Spirit enables us to live this life of victory and purpose. Scripture says "without a vision the people perish." (Proverbs 29:18) That was true for those who were pursuing keeping the law and it is true for those of us who live under God's grace. Because of that grace we have open access to the power of God and the Holy Spirit guides us in how to live our life in that power. One of the big fall aways in today's world is we have accepted the attitude of apathy and indifference. We don't have time to be waffling in our faith and just existing!! We are to be moving from victory to victory for Christ as we continue to present the hope of salvation to all we meet.

Do you have a stubborn heart that doesn't understand what God's Word says about living the Spirit-filled life? Then it is time to wake up to the fact that God wants you to realize just how powerful the Holy Spirit is and that He wants you to follow His ways. Some people who call themselves followers of Christ just don't understand and don't want to wake up. Listen to the reaction Steven got when He said this in Acts 7:51 “You stubborn people! You are heathen at heart and deaf to the truth. Must you forever resist the Holy Spirit? That’s what your ancestors did, and so do you! And for those words they killed Steven. Time to surrender to the Holy Spirit changes in your heart and burn brightly for Jesus!! All of the ways you view others and the inclination you have to serve Christ may be a surprise to you, but it shouldn't be. Just like Jason Bourne you are waking up to the fact there is more going on with your life than you realized and it is now time to give it to God and let Him use you like He intended.

The Pilgrimage continues......
