The Word on the Street-Series Indoctrination

Writer: David WarrenDavid Warren

Philippians 4:And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.

A new trend has taken over the television watching of our lives. It came to the forefront during the Covid dilemma. We were all rushed inside our homes afraid of catching Covid and in those homes we discovered that we could set down for hours and watch a full series of shows, thus wasting about six hours, on average, to finish a series. It reminds me of the "mind" altering scenes in a futuristic movie where someone is brainwashed by constant images to believe or do something for an evil power. The agents in those movies couldn't keep the brainwashing from happening and we can't either.

I found myself willing to give hours to a weak storyline and found myself identifying with characters, and actually defending their wrong actions because I came to like them. This is total indoctrination and I am just now admitting it. Over the time of watching these series, we are "hooked" and don't think we can quit before finding out what is going to happen next. But we can quit and we must quit because this fictional reality is not real and it is messing up our thinking!! I love British Mysteries, and I mean love them. WRONG. I am hooked on British Mysteries and I must stop letting them grab so much of my time and put my mind and time to better use than being indoctrinated by their version of the truth. Time to go cold turkey!!

As the above verses say "Fix your thoughts on what is true and honorable, and right, and pure and love and admirable." These shows do not even come close to any of those things we are to fix our eyes on. They begin to tout questionable lifestyles that are against scripture and over a period of time we allow that to weaken our belief in what the Bible says about something, and it changes us! Really changes us. Not to mention the effect it can have on our children. Teaching our children the ways of God through Bible Study must be the priority. But how can it be if we are hooked on these series? We can't!!

As the officer said to the questionable person stopped on the interstate where he said "Step away from the car!" We must also follow God's instructions and "step away from the questionable Murder Mystery" that corrupts our mind and steadily indoctrinates us toward sin. It doesn't have to have an R rating for us to avoid it. We must recognize that it is brainwashing us and avoid it at all costs. The enemy is not obvious, but very subtle, and he knows how to attract us in a step-by-step manner to change our thinking from Godliness to evil in a systematic way. I also realize that when an action has become such a big part of our life we will make excuses to keep doing it. But just stop and see if maybe your personality and actions have changed since "power watching" some of these series that seem so innocent. Satan always comes across as innocent and then he's got us. Flee, flee, flee and submit to God on this one and see what God will show you about future "power watching" and how it affects you. James 4:7 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
