In anything, we see the 'real thing' and the 'fake thing', and in the Christian life, you see those with a fake message that is always self-serving. The truth always comes out, though, and God is the one who shines the light on the truth and the lies. Paul had to deal with a group of false apostles who were preaching falsehoods about the gospel, and hoping to get many converts for their cause, but they lost out. God is involved in keeping the liars in check, even when it seems they are getting what they want and more.
2 Corinthians 11: 3 But I fear that somehow your pure and undivided devotion to Christ will be corrupted, just as Eve was deceived by the cunning ways of the serpent.4 You happily put up with whatever anyone tells you, even if they preach a different Jesus than the one we preach, or a different kind of Spirit than the one you received, or a different kind of gospel than the one you believed. 5 But I don’t consider myself inferior in any way to these “super apostles” who teach such things. 6 I may be unskilled as a speaker, but I’m not lacking in knowledge. We have made this clear to you in every possible way.
Paul had to deal with cheaters all the time, and it made his work even more challenging, as those fakes, who taught a different gospel, were dirtying the pure water of the gospel he was preaching. But the gospel was preached in spite of their fake message, and the truth won out. Paul reemphasized this message in his letter to Timothy, and in 2 Timothy Chapter 4, Paul writes the following to his "son in the faith." 2 Timothy 2:3 For a time is coming when people will no longer listen to sound and wholesome teaching. They will follow their own desires and will look for teachers who will tell them whatever their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will reject the truth and chase after myths.
Truth is vital to having a clarity about Jesus and the working of the Holy Spirit, and that truth is right there in your Bible. Read it and study it, and you will sniff out the false messages and hold to the perfect truth of the Word of God.
